Manager's Assessment - Stockton Town

Manager's Assessment - Stockton Town

Nigel Oldrini19 Nov 2023 - 11:02

'first and foremost, I want to apologise to the travelling support for what we served up there as it wasn’t good enough'

A disappointed Lee Attenborough spoke to Radio Belper Town’s Tom Whewell after Saturday’s defeat at Stockton.

For the first ten minutes I was happy. We got into some good areas, and it looked like it would be a really good game. We were knocked by the first two goals but the second one really killed our confidence and I think it was a strange first half and we were four nil down at half time.

We had a lot of the ball around the box, but the difference was that they were ruthless, and they had five or six shots and four of them went in. It was one of those days where we have missed the target with everything, and they hit the target with everything.

Our ‘keeper saved nothing and our back four in and around the box looked a bit all over the place to be honest, but at the end of the day these lads have been brilliant for us so far. So, I’m not going to overegg it and it was a bad day at the office.

Everything that could go wrong went wrong even down to Rhys (Dolan) when he had to come off when he was just starting to look good after the first fifteen minutes. But it’s just one game and all we’ve lost is three points.

There’s no point in going in (to the changing room) and throwing the kitchen sink at them because they’re gutted with the result. Every time we’ve lost a game this season, we’ve won the next one, so we’ve got to bounce back.

So, the message is, it’s just one game but I’m really disappointed. We’ve not been as embarrassed as that for a long, long time. First and foremost, I want to apologise to the travelling support for what we served up there as it wasn’t good enough.

I said to the boys that they did to us in the first half what we should have done to Liversage last week. We had enough chances to be four nil up at half time and we had enough chances to make it comfortable. We could have won that by six or seven, but we didn’t.

That’s the difference between us and the real top sides in the league. We’ve seen it against Dunstan and again against these, and we’re not quite at that level at the minute, but we’re working on it, but we’ve certainly got to put up a better fight than that.
