Palmer pleased with players' character

David Laughlin7 Dec 2015 - 20:55

Charlie Palmer gave his side credit for the character they showed to come back from 2-0 down at Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday.

“We had a couple of chances but we did not take them, then we were punished by two very sloppy goals.

“But I must give my boys credit as they showed spirit and never gave up.

“I never give up as a manager and they have done well to get back into the game.

“What saddens me is, with the group of players I have got, if we applied ourselves properly and had the right attitude we would not have been in that position, but at least they showed the character to get a result from 2-0 down.

“We started the game well then we took our foot off of the pedal.

“Some players who I am not going to name thought it was going to be easier than it was as the afternoon went on.

I did not feel the attitude was right in the warm up and it showed, we made an uphill battle for ourselves.”

Top scorer Evan Garnett missed a penalty but later did get himself on the score sheet and Palmer gave his thoughts on his performance.

“Evan has got to add a bit more to his game when he is not scoring goals.

“What I mean is he has got to work the defenders a lot more, the ball has got to stick and he has to be a pain in the backside for defenders.

“Look at Jamie Vardy at Leicester, he never gives the defenders an inch. He (Evan) is a great goalscorer but there is another side to his game that he needs to work on.”

Alex Steadman (pictured) took responsibility to take the second penalty and prove Palmer wrong.

“Steady (Steadman) was confident, he is a goalscorer. I wanted Jonathan Williams to take it but to be fair to Steady he took it well and proved me wrong so well done to him.”
