Pride Despite Defeat: Attenborough Praises Battling Display in Alfreton Cup Exit

Nigel Oldrini

Chris Nelson spoke to Lee Attenborough after last night's defeat at Alfreton

CN: Lee, going out the of the Senior Cup tonight, a narrow 1-0 defeat at Alfreton, but not after giving a real good crack in the second half.

LA: Yes, a real tight game. I think the lads are a credit to the club tonight, left everything on the pitch and defended really well.

For large spells like games, especially the second half, I thought we were by far the better team and on top. They had good control, they rotated the ball well in midfield, but we kept the ball in front of us. Didn't really get hurt much in behind, defended our wide areas 1v1 really well.

We limited them to two proper shots in the game. One was a really good finish and the other one KP saved. We've had numerous snapshots where we've just hit it straight down the middle.
But we did more than enough to get a draw as a bare minimum.

CN: Back in the league on Saturday, how important was it tonight just to make sure the score got through unscathed?

LA: Yes, it's always important to not pick up injuries, but I think that was a tough battle.
Both sides went near on full tilt, and I think we've managed bodies as well as we possibly can. Obviously, we lost Jordan tonight, he's unavailable. Tav picked up his hamstring injury.

We sort of rested Draper because he's got a bit of a knock to his knee, so we had to rotate a few. But all the lads that came on, impacted the game. I'd say about representing the club properly, we've done that tonight, we've left everything on the pitch.

We easily could have won that game, let alone drawn it. You wouldn't have seen there was a big difference between the two sides, despite them being a level above. Obviously, they do well in that league as well.

We can be disappointed with the result; we can't be disappointed with the performance. The only one thing I said to the lads after the game there is just (we) need to get our shots off quicker. Two or three times round the box, we can pull the trigger, and we don't and we check back and then it gets snuffed out.

We must have a world record for the amount of shots we get blocked. But that's because we're just taking shots at the wrong time and we don't get them off quick enough. That's the only gripe I've got, but when you ask for your players to give you everything, we've had that tonight.

So that's all we can ask for.
