We Gave Ourselves Too Much to Do”: Attenborough reflects on a frustrating 2–1 defeat

Nigel Oldrini

Chris Nelson spoke to Lee Attenborough after today's defeat to AFC Rushden and Diamonds

CN: So Lee, on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat this afternoon, our six-game unbeaten run comes to an end, but the question is how?

LA: Been here before, haven't we? A really, really, really good performance. Especially second half, attack like the Alamo. Ball after ball in the box.

They defended for their lives, so credit to them. They probably blocked four-point blank shots. Keeper’s made literally a world class save in the first half off Charlie.

Made another one in the second half. I think Draper's offside for that one, but a top save there. I genuinely think we've dominated the game for the entire ninety.

I think it was more even in the first 20, 25 minutes in terms of balance of play. But obviously it's two moments. I keep saying this every week, people must think I'm mental, but KP's not made a save again.

First one, they picked from twenty yards. It's flicked off Draper's foot and rolled into the other corner. And we just didn't lock the edge of the box down.

That was a problem there. That's just an individual error. We've had instruction on that in the last couple of games about whose job that is.

So, I won't say it, but that person knows. We've got to lock the edge of the box down its basics.

They've had a free shot from twenty yards. Gets a deflection and goes in. And I don't know how many minutes later, but another instruction was you can't allow their number eight an ex football league player time around the box because he's got a great strike on him and
he scored a goal of the season.

Well, certainly the best one we've seen down here this season.

And you have to take your medicine on that. He opened his body out from twenty-five yards and smashed it under the angle. That happens.

But the reaction from our lads was brilliant. You know, first half, in the last 10, 15 minutes, we're all over them. I think we've had one blocked on the line.

Defenders blocked him maybe, I don't know. Tav’s had a snapshot.

Grats had a good chance. Just another one of them where it won't go in. And then when we get that goal for 2-1, which is a good strike from Grats, I felt if we got one, we'd get two.

I genuinely thought if we got two, we'd get three. It's one of them games. All one-way traffic, second half.

But I think that's obviously why they are where they are in terms of unbeaten after 11 in the league. I think they're, if I say, the 18 or 19 unbeaten. Like, you know, moments of quality change games.

And we've had those moments in the last two or three weeks. But today, the moments of quality were on their side in that first half. And we just gave ourselves too much to do.

And we very nearly did it. I can't be disappointed with our performance, Chris. We played really well.

CN: The timing, obviously, of the two suspensions for both of your central midfielders is not ideal. But you must be pleased with Curtis coming in and putting the shift in. And new lad Charlie alongside him as well.

A: Yes, listen, you look different in there without Jono and Jordan. We know what Jono and Jordan are. They get about the pitch.

They break up play. You know, they give you a base to play from. We know they've got limitations in terms of other things.

But when Curt and Charlie come in there, almost a flip reverse, they may cover less ground. But between them, you get a bit more ability on the ball. And you get somebody who can break the box in. Charlie.

I mean, you've got a fine margin in that first half. I think Danny Gordon, for us, has had a shot, deflected, goes just wide for a corner. Their deflection goes in.

Charlie checked back on his right foot, whipped a really nice-shaped shot in, went an inch over the bar. They've at the other end he goes an inch under the bar. They were literally the moments.

So, yes, two central and midfielders did well. Listen, I thought Mansell was superb again. I think he was the best player on the pitch again.

It just wouldn't fall for us that last five minutes. I think Jude’s got into a scramble there on the goal line. Nothing seemed to drop for us in the box.

You know, it's one of them where you're frustrated as a manager because, again, it's here. I know we've won and drawn the last two games, so it's not drastic. But we're somehow finding ways to win away.

Even if it's ugly, we don't play well. But here, again, we've played well enough today to get at least a point. I still think we probably deserve to get all three.

And you end up with nothing. So, lick our wounds again. Obviously, that was six unbeaten until today.

Let's see if we can go back on another little run. But we did say this was a tough run of games coming. We got one out of the way with three points at Nuneaton.

We should have got something today and we didn't. So, we have to just regroup. Yes, go again what I say again.

You can be disappointed in the result. You can't be disappointed in that performance.
