With six of their close season acquisitions on view for all or part of the 90 minutes it was Jonathan Margetts who shone as he grabbed two goals for the Nailers in the first 16 minutes.
With the contest only 10 minutes old Margetts showed considerable class when a he steered a low shot just wide of the Vikings’ ‘keeper to give Belper a deserved opening lead.
Margetts showed superb judgement to send a measured lob over the advancing Zaniewski to score his second to give the Nailers a firm grip of the game, while the hosts looked all at sea.
While a considerable score line looked on the cards and with the game barely 20 minutes old, Goole, to their credit, threw off their poor start and began to challenge the Nailers in all areas of the field.
The Vikings drew level in the 26th minute when Shaun Heselwood latched onto a through ball and slotted it past the exposed Leigh Overton in the Belper goal.
A 31st minute free awarded to Goole led to the Vikings’ equaliser with Josh Schofield threading the ball around the defensive wall and just inside the near post with Overton at full stretch.
Margetts squandered a presentable opportunity in the 38th minute, but with the game having settled down and both teams enjoying equal possession; the teams went in at half time all square.
Defences were on top in the second half, and with a much changed line up the Nailers never looked quite as threatening as they had in the early stages of the game.
Myles Wright, who took over from Leigh Overton after the break had very little to do, despite early pressure from the hosts, but the same can also be said of the Vikings’ stopper Mat Zaniewski who only became seriously involved again in the closing stages.
Another newcomer Damian Reeves nearly opened his account in the 89th minute when he found a gap after Sam Wright’s incisive pass, but Zaniewski denied him with a great stop from close range.
Margetts went close to claiming his hat trick moments later but his shot fizzed past the post after which the referee brought the game to its close.
Morgan James and Kyle Tyler also played their part in the game while another new recruit Andre Johnson was forced to retire early in the game due to injury. Tom Wilson who appeared in a few games before the curtailment of last season looked composed at the back, but his permanent signing remains in doubt as the youngster looks to step up to the professional ranks. Cecil Nyomi, the Nailers’ most recent signing wasn’t involved on the night.
