Once was the time when the Nailers played the Zebras on a regular basis in the Northern Counties East League days and then in the Northern Premier League First Division, but the Lincolnshire club fell upon hard times over the last few years and are now playing their football in the Northern Counties East League – Division One.
In more successful time the Zebras’ claim to fame is that they have won the F A Carlsberg Vase not once, but twice in 1996 and 2003
Despite there being two league’s difference between the teams it was hard to distinguish between them as the first half proved to very even.
Both sides managed to get the ball in the net however, but were ruled out for offside.
The second half brought changes to the line up with Riece Bertram showing up well in the midfield and he was behind a much improved team performance after the break.
Craig Nelthorpe and Jonathan Margetts were contributors to the first goal of the afternoon and a trialist put the finishing touches to the move prior to Alex Peterson slotting home the opening goal.
Sam Wright, following his surge into the Zebras’ half was presented with a good chance after the Brigg ‘keeper miscued his clearance, leaving Wright the opportunity to place the ball between the posts from distance.
Jonathan Margetts scored the third after some good approach play from Nathan Curtis and the Nailers ran out comfortable winners at the EC Surfacing Stadium or probably better known as The Hawthorns to Nailers supporters.
The Nailers next pre season game is at Pontefract Collieries on Tuesday (13th) kick off 7.30pm
