The Nailers played their part in what was an excellent work out for Grant Black’s side, and again there were plenty of players, ‘new’ and ‘old’ on view for supporters to get to know and assess their worth for themselves.

This was Belper’s first home friendly fixture where a full first team squad was involved, although there was a home win in midweek over Walsall Academy (2-0) when there was a mix of fringe and academy players on view.

Belper were prominent in the opening stages with Jonathan Margetts turning well on a Ben Rhodes pass but the Belper striker was unable to make the best of the opportunity.

Good Belper approach play was soon stemmed by Coalville who began to look dangerous themselves, and Tim Berridge had shot that bent wide, while Chris Robinson had a goal disallowed for offside.

Berridge went close again on 19 minutes after the Ravens found gaps in the Belper defence, however his crisply struck shot on the half volley whistled just past the far post.

The Nailers fought back in the 26th minute when Alex Peterson got on the end of a good Belper move only to have his shot deflected away from the target and then Jonathan Margetts twisted and turned inside the penalty area and sent his shot just wide.

Leigh Overton made a save at full length to deny a 25 yard effort from Berridge in the 30th minute, and moments later a header by Chris Robinson appeared to be nodded against the crossbar by a Belper defender.

Todd Jordon was on hand to divert another shot from the dangerous Berridge, however the Nailers finished the half with an enterprising counterattack that ended with a wayward effort from Nathan Curtis.

The Nailers were celebrating a goal within a minute of the restart after the impressive Donald Chimalilo beat three players to set up Jonathan Margetts who went on to score with a very cool finish across the face of the goalkeeper and inside the far post.

The Ravens were level on 52 minutes after a long clearance bounced over Danny South’s head and led to former Accrington Stanley strikerBilly Kee diverting the ball just inside the near post with Leigh Overton unable to stop it.

The Nailers almost regained the lead when a ball over the top was just out of reach for Corey Gregory who had ghosted in behind the Ravens’ defence, but it was the visitors who scored again on 56 minutes when Tim Berridge snapped up a close range opportunity after Overton’s earlier great save spilled out to the Ravens’ striker.

Chimalilo showed up well again to create an opportunity for Margetts but this time the Nailers striker put his shot the wrong side of the post.

And unfortunately as Belper were getting themselves back into the game, the killer blow was administered by substitute Jardine who converted a near post corner with a glancing header on 82 minutes.

It had been an entertaining game for supporters against a skilful and well organised Coalville side, and the Nailers had been very competitive and showed spells of creative football that bodes well for the new season.
