Belper Town were dumped unceremoniously out of the Emirates F A Cup after conceding 4 goals in the last 20 minutes of the tie.

When Cameron Johnson equalised in the 60th minute the Nailers were in the ascendancy, but it all went horribly wrong for Lee Attenborough’s men after an unfortunate own goal handed back the initiative to Leek.

Ben Algar was left on the bench and was replaced by Luke Martin while Ben Rhodes switched to left back to accommodate him. It was a move that never seemed to be a comfortable one for either player.

Rio Molyneaux was also left out in favour of Mason Warren who was making his first start for the club.

The visitors settled into the game very quickly and after 2 minutes Aaron Opoku had forced Jonathan Hedge into his first save of the afternoon.

Alex Troke nearly caught out Eric Merner on 11 minutes with a long-range effort after he had spotted the Leek ‘keeper well off his line.

Leek skipper Marc Grocott hit a low drive just wide, but it was just a forerunner of a more accurate effort from him in the 21st minute. Good work from Opoku culminated in a pass to the unmarked Blues skipper and he accurately found the corner of the net with Hedge stranded.

Former Nailer Jake Avery put a left footed shot just wide then the Nailers came out of their shell in the latter stages of the half and managed to put pressure on the Blues’ rearguard.

In the final seconds of the half Leek conjured up a shooting opportunity when Grocott and Opoku combed however Hedge was equal to the shot.

The first 15 minutes of the second half proved to be Belper’s best of the game and Phil Watt had a header from a Curtis Burrows free kick and a half volley just over the bar.

The equaliser arrived in the 60th minute when sheer persistence from Cameron Johnson saw him wrestle the ball off Julius Ndene, cut inside and blast his shot into the far corner.

Curtis Burrows had a shot rebound off the foot of the post in the 65th minute and Kevin Bastos fired the rebound just wide.

No-one could predict what would come next except that the Nailers had looked slight favourites at this stage to win the tie.

It all started in the 71st minute when Watt unfortunately turned an Avery cross into his own goal to regain the lead, then everything just fell apart.

Avery fired a loose ball high into the corner of the net in the 71st minute and on 85 minutes Liam Buckley took advantage of some slack marking to fire home number 4.

Avery struck again 2 minutes later, and the Nailers were shocked and stunned at their sudden collapse, and even though Watt atoned for his earlier o.g with a headed goal in added time, the Nailers left the field at full time wondering what on earth had gone wrong.
