Late Goals Lead To Pre-Season Friendly Defeat at Sheffield FC

Late Goals Lead To Pre-Season Friendly Defeat at Sheffield FC

Nigel Oldrini8 Jul - 09:56

Belper Town kicked off their pre-season campaign at Sheffield when late goals turned a likely victory into defeat.

On a glorious summer evening both teams were eager to get the game underway, and the Nailers held the upper hand for most of the game without scoring the goals to back it up.

Belper’s first opportunity arrived in the 20th minute when Jordan Fankwe’s pass let Jack Edwards in for an angled shot on goal, but the Sheffield ‘keeper blocked his effort.

The Nailers passed the ball around well enough in midfield without creating a great deal up front, then Sheffield had their first effort on goal in the 32nd minute that went straight to Kieran Preston.

The Nailers created a tempting opportunity for Harry Draper who uncharacteristically headed a great chance off target after Jack Edwards’ cross found him at the far post.

Draper’s dipping volley in the 43rd minute went high and wide and half time was reached with the feeling that the Nailers should be ahead.

Draper could have found the target in the 58th minute when the ball came to him just inside the penalty area, but he dragged his shot wide of the target.

The Belper striker was involved again soon afterwards when he directed a powerful header over the crossbar from 12 yards out.

The Nailers deservedly went ahead in the 70th minute when Belper’s number 7 (Trialist) bundled the ball over the line from a corner kick.

A raft of substitutes from both sides occurred mid-way through the half with the hosts seemingly benefitting more than Belper from their changes.

The Nailers slowly lost their grip on the game and Ryan Cook equalised for Sheffield on 80 minutes, and with the Belper defence in disarray, Alex Asada slotted home the winner three minutes later.

Sheffield missed further opportunities in the dying minutes to make their victory more convincing.

The Nailers looked in good form for most of the game, and considering they were without key players such as Jacob Gratton, Louis Keenan and Curtis Burrows, the result is less important than the performance.

Belper Town (starting): Preston, Rhodes, Eccleshill, Fankwe, Broadhead, Evans, Trialist Trialist, Wafula, Draper, Thompson-Matthews, Edwards. Subs: Trialists 1,2,4 and 4, Hassett.
