Nailers cruise through Preliminary Round tie at Rugby

Chris Nelson

Belper Town put in a near-faultless display to dispatch Rugby Town at Butlin Road and advance to the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Captain Jack Broadhead returned to the starting lineup while Curtis Burrows and Ben Rhodes were also back in. With seven substitutes allowed in Cup competitions, manager Lee Attenborough had plenty of options at his disposal.

Belper started brightly and on three minutes, Harry Draper won the ball after a long pass from Broadhead before laying it off for Tav Kuleya who saw his shot saved by Ash Bodycote.

The Nailers would hit the woodwork twice on the afternoon and the first instance came in the 12th minute. Tom Eccleshall picked out Kuleya who found Jack Edwards. The impressive Belper winger cut in from the right and his effort crashed back off the bar.

Edwards floated in a cross after 16 minutes from which Draper couldn't quite get his header on target.

A goalmouth scramble on 24 minutes saw several shooting chances for Belper, the last of which for Ben Rhodes saw his shot blocked.

Belper weren't to be denied for long and took the lead in the 33rd minute. Louis Keenan's corner was perfectly delivered on to the head of Draper who found the back of the net.

Five minutes later it was two. This time Rhodes with the cross and Draper once again found the bottom corner with his header.

Belper were in cruise control at this point but knew that Rugby had come back from two goals down in last season's FA Trophy encounter. So when the third goal came four minutes before half-time it brought with it a feeling that maybe that comeback win for the hosts was about to be avenged.

It was a wonderfully worked goal by the Nailers. A long ball from the back landed right in the path of Edwards. His touch was outstanding, opening up the whole corner of the pitch for him and he ran on before unselfishly rolling the ball back for Tom Ecccleshall who opened his Belper Town account with a nice low finish.

Eight minutes in to the second half, some wonderful passing between Rhodes, Eccleshall, Burrows then Draper saw the latter get a shot away from a tight angle which was deflected for a corner.

On the hour mark, a Rhodes throw-in was flicked on by Jonathan Wafula before Draper once again was denied his hat trick by a deflection.

Kieran Preston was enjoying a quiet afternoon but was called in to action in the 62nd minute when substitute Devonn O'Sullivan tried his luck following a cross then Burrows cleared a subsequent effort off the line.

From the counter-attack which Belper launched, Edwards saw his shot clear the bar before back down at the other end, Rivel Mardenborough shot straight at Preston then Burrows picked out Draper as the Nailers attacked again but for the third time a deflection took his shot over the bar.

Rugby gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a penalty in the 80th minute, given harshly as Rhodes stood his ground inside the penalty area. Mardenborough stepped up and slotted home the spot kick to reduce the arrears.

Substitute Jack Rogers found Edwards in the 83rd minute but his shot was well saved and the ball came back to Rogers who blasted over.

In the 86th minute Edwards fired over after cutting in from the left, then a couple of minutes later Lewis Austin saw his low shot saved.

Belper calmed any remaining nerves with a fourth goal in the first minute of injury time. Burrows ran in from the right and from a seemingly impossible angle he fired in to the roof of the net to cap another impressive performance.

There was still time for the Nailers to hit the bar again, with Rogers curling in a shot from 25 yards which was inches from making it five.
