Nailers Persistence Against Bridlington Pays Off

Belper Town maintained their position at the top of the league but had to fight hard for the three points against a resolute Bridlington side.

Keiran Walker was named in the starting line up as a replacement for the suspended Phil Watt, and James Cadman was selected ahead of Alex Troke who was named as a substitute.

The Nailers had previously cantered to an easy away win at Bridlington four weeks earlier, but it was soon apparent that the Seasiders weren’t about to allow a repeat of an embarrassing 5-1 home defeat.

Playing with a back five, they proved to be a hard nut to crack, and they also showed good ability when they counterattacked, all of which frustrated the Nailers until midway through the second half.

A season’s best attendance of 601 were treated to an intriguing game of cat and mouse especially in a first half that saw the visitor’s squander their best chance of the game.

Before this Cameron Johnson had weighed in with a couple of shots in the 5th and 13th minute, and the Seasiders fired a warning on 19 minutes when Pete Davidson had a shot charged down in a dangerous area.

Then came the visitor’s best chance 2 minutes later. Lewis Dennison pinged in a particularly fierce free kick from the left side and when Nailers’ ‘keeper Jonathan Hedge couldn’t hold on the ball, Seasiders’ skipper James Williamson volleyed a close-range effort on to the cross bar.

The Nailers finished the half with the majority of possession and Johnson was unfortunate to see a 35th minute shot turned wide by James Hitchcock.

After the break the Nailers endured an uninspiring first 10 minutes and then a Johnson cross met by the head of Kevin Bastos, went just wide. However, the Nailers looked much better from this point on.

Bastos had another header scrambled off the line on 62 minutes, then the Nailers made the all-important break through on 64 minutes when Danny South won a penalty kick after a defender climbed all over him in the penalty area to concede a foul.

Cameron Johnson took the responsibility and converted the spot kick and made no mistake and a collective sigh of relief went around the ground. Tenacious Johnson made an excellent assist towards the second goal on 69 minutes.

With the ‘keeper unwisely out of his area, Johnson tackled the Bridlington custodian and the ball sped out to the unmarked Revarnelle James who was close to the touch line some 40 yards out.

James saw that the goal was at his mercy and hit a long curling shot that bounced neatly on the goal line and up into the top of the net. It was a sensational strike from so far out, however it put the Nailers firmly in control.

The crowd were baying for more goals, but the Seasiders kept their composure and continued to frustrate the Nailers in their attempts to add to the score.

Mason Warren’s 90th minute free kick needed a good save to prevent the ball creeping in at the far post, and the Nailers were unlucky in more attempts as the remaining minutes of added time slowly expired.

The Seasiders belied their lowly league position with dogged performance, but the Nailers know that if they are to stay in the upper reaches of the division then games such as this must be won.
