Nailers maintain pressure at top with narrow victory

Belper Town made it four wins in a row, with a third successive clean sheet in County Durham.

A 3G pitch, combined with a partisan crowd and unpleasant weather made for a difficult cocktail awaiting the Nailers but they passed another tough test at the Belle View Stadium.

It was a quiet start and it wasn't until the 12th minute that a left footed shot from Ben Ramsey tested Dan Moore in the Belper goal. Moore saved well with his feet and would go on to have another fantastic afternoon in green.

He pulled off a repeat save a couple of minutes later, again from Ramsey after he'd been fed in by Kaleb Young.

On 17 minutes a great cross field pass found Jack Gibbons, his cross to the back post found leading scorer Wil Shaw but with the Belper defence stranded he hit the post with the goal gaping.

The Nailers found their feet after this and in the 27th minute a Mason Warren free kick was headed back across goal by Danny South but James Oliver couldn't quite connect properly with his shot.

Just before the half hour mark Curtis Burrows laid the ball off for Zak Goodson, his left foot shot was just wide as Belper improved by the minute.

They created another chance on 35 minutes when a Warren corner reached the in-form James Cadman who struck a first time volley wide.

Seven minutes in to the second half a Gibbons cross found Ramsey, his point blank header produced another top save from Moore.

In the 59th minute a cut back from the left by Oliver found Cadman, his shot was deflected over the bar.

The 68th minute saw a wonder save from Moore, this time Jake Orrell with the shot.

Three minutes later a pinpoint ball from Declan Dunn found Kevin Bastos, his shot was tipped on to the post and a few seconds of pinball later the hosts cleared for a corner.

The decisive moment of the match came on 72 minutes. Consett were unable to clear a Burrows corner from the left, and when Dunn played the ball back in Cadman tried his luck. His shot deflected to Burrows who had an effort which was blocked nearly on the line but Bastos followed up to move to 18 goals for the season.

With 11 minutes remaining, substitute Kieren Aplin brought the ball down well and fired off a half volley which clipped the bar and went over. Belper would be in for a nervy finale.

On 82 minutes Bastos intercepted a poor defensive pass by Consett and had a shot from outside the box to which Kel Chibueze was equal.

With five minutes remaining Belper had a penalty shout when Zak Goodson appeared to have his heels clipped inside the box. The referee waved away the claims and brought out a yellow card for simulation, a fate which had befallen Karl Demidh earlier in the match.

Consett huffed and puffed but the Nailers defence stood firm to see out the match and claim another valuable three points which keeps them in touch with Stockton at the top of the table, with a midweek trip to Cleethorpes to be followed by the visit of Stocksbridge Park Steels.
