If the Nailers don’t make it into the play offs this season they may look back at this game as one they should have won easily, particularly after a dominant second half.

For the first time this season, and after results in midweek, Belper slipped out of the play off zone and started the game in sixth place.

The Nailers welcomed Mason Frizelle, a defender signed on dual registration from Basford United and he went straight into the side with club skipper Phil Watt dropping to the bench.

Rhys Dolan started his second loan spell at the club in the left back slot which allowed Mason Warren to move into his more favoured mid field role.

Declan Dunn and James Cadman had recovered from illness, but Belper’s twin strike force of Kevin Bastos and Karl Demidh were still sitting out suspensions.

Derry Robson and Alex Peterson were names very familiar to Nailers’ supporters in the Ossett line up.

Belper started well and were on the front foot for the first few minutes, however Ossett’s Sam Tingle had the first shot of the game when he sent an 8th minute drive just wide of the upright.

After a series of corner kicks from the hosts, they took the lead following some indecision in the Belper defence and Alex Peterson was given time and space to prod the ball in from close range in the 16th minute.

Some great work from Brodie Litchfield, arguably Belper’s best player on the day, created a good chance for Tiago Nassunculo who fired an easy opportunity over the bar from six yards out.

Ossett continued to edge the Nailers on shooting chances and Niah Payne hit a presentable opportunity wide on 26 minutes and Adam Priestley put a volley wide of the target three minutes later.

The Nailers equalised on 30 minutes after a great piece of ball control from Goodson gave him a clear run on goal and he finished well with a shot into the far corner.

Curtis Burrows had to be alert to head the ball off the goal line on the stroke of half time, and while the first period of the game had been relatively even, the second was dominated by Belper.

The Nailers began strongly, and despite one or two anxious breaks from the home team were always in control.

Dolan had a fierce shot charged down on 50 minutes, then an excellent cross from Litchfield was met by Goodson who couldn’t direct his volley on target.

Goodson had a fine effort fly past the far post on the hour mark and Tiago Nassanculo set himself up perfectly for a shot but ballooned his effort high over the bar.

Goodson turned provider on 64 minutes with a brilliant cross from the byeline, and although Nassanculo made contact with the ball it hit the ground and bounced up only for Callum Hiddleston to deflect it onto the cross bar.

Litchfield intercepted the ball just inside the Ossett half and ran 35 yards before releasing the ball, when he should really have had a go himself.

The Nailers continued to pummel the Ossett defence without making a breakthrough and when Goodson appeared to be felled inside the penalty area, claims were made more in desperation than in reality.

Belper have played much worse and won games, but their inability to make the best of the many good positions they create is costing them at the moment.
