Nailers run Champions close but return empty handed

Chris Nelson19 Apr - 19:11

Belper Town ran newly crowned NPL East Champions Cleethorpes Town close on the Lincolnshire coast but ultimately lost by the odd goal in three.

Manager Lee Attenborough had to move Jonathan Wafula to right back but otherwise the Nailers were unchanged from last weekend.

The hosts took the lead on 12 minutes when Belper couldn't clear a throw-in from the right. The ball was half cleared as far as Connor O'Grady and his volley nestled in the corner of the net.

Things got worse in the 20th minute when Ioan Evans was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box. Adam Haw took responsibility, his calm penalty doubling the Owls lead.

Ten minutes before the break a Curtis Burrows flick-on found Kevin Bastos and his shot from 25 yards called former Nailers goalkeeper Ollie Battersby in to action, but he was able to watch the ball go just wide of his left hand post.

In the 59th minute great passing play between Louis Keenan and Bastos helped the ball on to Jack Watson but Battersby was able to save his shot.

A minute later Cleethorpes nearly put the game to bed when the dangerous Bradley Dockerty cut in from the left and shot but Kieran Preston was able to watch it go wide.

Belper gave themselves a lifeline in the 81st minute. It was a fantastic individual goal from Kevin Bastos who picked up the ball on the right and beat two players before entering the penalty area and producing a fine finish past Battersby into the corner.

Seconds later at the other end 26-goal Josh Walker fired an effort off the bar as the match headed for a frantic finish.

In the final minute of normal time Jack Broadhead headed just over from a Keenan cross and four minutes in to injury time both Wafula and Evans had shots during some six-yard box pinball but Cleethorpes survived and were able to enjoy the trophy presentation off the back of three points.

Results elsewhere all went against Belper meaning they drop to 6th with two games remaining, however most of the teams around them are facing each other on Monday as the Nailers return to the Raygar Stadium.
