A victory at Bridlington next Saturday will see the Nailers finish in third or fourth place depending on the result of Stocksbridge’s game at Dunston.
Another huge crowd turned out to witness the Nailers’ final home fixture of the season (play offs excepted) and they weren’t disappointed as a brace of goals from Kevin Bastos and a Curtis Burrows tap in gave Belper a comfortable victory.
Ben Rhodes returned after suspension while Jonathan Wafula came in for Harry Wood who was named amongst the substitutes.
A hard and bumpy pitch prevented flowing football but after a scrappy opening ten minutes the Nailers settled nerves when they took the lead in the 11th minute.
Andrew Buah started things off with a great weaving run and cross before the ball reached Kevin Bastos who drove the ball in.
There wasn’t a great deal of goal mouth activity at either end after the goal, however Curtis Burrows had a good volley blocked and in the 32nd minute Bastos showed what he can do with a skilful run and cross that failed to reach a Belper player.
Bastos nearly extended Belper’s lead on 51 minutes when he connected with Louis Keenan’s deep cross, and from about 20 yards Bastos’ header thumped against the cross bar.
The second goal did arrive in the 57th minute with Bastos the creator when his shot was fumbled by Michael Roxburgh and Burrows nipped in to take full advantage.
Bastos was involved again when he volleyed against the bar in the 63rd minute, then in a rare moment of concern, Sheffield’s Archie White with almost his first touch saw his shot beaten away at the near post by Kieran Preston.
Substitute Harry Wood forced Roxburgh into a diving save on 75 minutes, then Bastos wrapped up the points 2 minutes later with a quick turn and shot that fizzed past the Sheffield ‘keeper.
Unfortunately, the Nailers couldn’t register a clean sheet when in added time Ben Rhodes was adjudged to have fouled Luke Aldrich in the penalty area, and the visitors grabbed a consolation when Keelan Grist converted the spot kick.
Now all the focus will be on Belper’s final league game at Bridlington where a win will see the Nailers in the play offs in the following week.
