Ladies Team come unstuck at the death

Chris Nelson20 Jan - 09:11

Belper Town Ladies conceded three late goals in defeat to Notts County's Development side at the Raygar Stadium.

The Nailers were without leading goalscorer Alice Faulding but welcomed back Sarah Roberts for her first appearance of the season.

The first chance went to Belper on eight minutes when Mia Carnelley's cross found Honor White but her shot was blocked.

In the 16th minute Lucie Selby came out to claim a long ball but as it held up on the surface Lucy Davey chipped the ball in to the net from range, however the offside flag was up.

The rest of the first half was a quiet affair and it wasn't until injury time that Leah Longdon rifled in a shot from all of 35 yards which had Mimi Millington in the Magpies goal backtracking, she was just able to tip the ball wide.

On the hour mark a long ball picked out Lily-May Jacobs but great defensive work by Katy Claxton meant the ball was cleared to safety.

In the 73rd minute a mazy run by Davey ended with a shot which flashed across the Belper goal and went just wide.

With ten minutes remaining after Belper were unable to clear the ball fell to Aurelia Burdett but she couldn't sort her feet out quickly enough and Selby was able to grab the ball on the line.

County were pushing hard at this point and on 83 minutes Stacey Maskery's cross landed at Davey's feet but her shot was blocked.

Just when the game was heading for a goalless draw the visitors turned the screw with three late goals.

Firstly in the 86th minute with Belper struggling to clear a corner, Gemma Cornes slotted home to open the scoring.

After a mix-up at the back two minutes into injury time, Burdett doubled the lead from close range.

The scoring was completed by Jacobs a minute later.

There was still time for Sarah Roberts to go agonisingly close to capping her return with a wonder goal but her 25 shot crashed off the crossbar.

Manager Luke Jackson had this to say at full-time:

"Tough one to take today. I thought first half we were really good and had a few chances to go in front, unfortunately when we don't have a recognised striker available the hardest thing in football becomes even harder.

"Credit to the girls, I thought we were solid right up until the last ten and ultimately came up short with tired legs.

"I'm proud of what I saw today and that was a team that is willing to graft for each other. We'll dust ourselves off and go again next week"
