Ladies Team fall to home defeat

Chris Nelson3 Feb - 10:24

Belper Town Ladies suffered a fifth successive defeat as Sherwood took the points away from Belper Leisure Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Belper welcomed back leading goalscorer Alice Faulding but were without Lucie Selby through injury.

Belper created the first chance of note in the 20th minute when Sarah Roberts won possession after good pressure on her opponent and she fed Faulding into a one on one with Chloe Hague-Naylor but the shot was just wide.

A couple of minutes later the visitors went close when Polly Lees-Collier fired a long range free kick just over the bar.

On the half hour mark Grace Adeyinka gave Sherwood the lead when she collected the ball 25 yards from goal before finding a great finish into the corner.

In the 38th minute a pinpoint through ball found Charlotte Piddings but Emma Varnam produced a fantastic save.

However within a minute the visitors doubled their lead. A corner from the left bounced back off the far post and into the path of Adeyinka who slotted home to make it two.

Five minutes into the second half Hollie Dalling went close with a free kick but this ended up being a sighter, with Dalling firing off an unstoppable shot from 30 yards in the 54th minute for the third goal.

In the 67th minute Belper went close when Honor White's 25 yard effort clipped the outside of the post and went wide.

On 73 minutes a rebound fell kindly to Roberts and she tried her luck from range but it was just over the bar.

Sherwood killed the game off once and for all with two minutes remaining when Adeyinka collected the ball and finished under Varnam.

Manager Luke Jackson had this to say at full time: "We were alright in parts, a frustrating one really. It's individual errors for goals or just not clearing our lines, not taking the game to them. It's a home game and we've got to try and impact that ourselves.

"A few sloppy goals but we move on, we go again next week".

Vice captain Dion Cowen added: "The next two games are really important for us, we really need to dig deep. We've got some players that will be back in the squad as well which will definitely help us"

Elsewhere in the division Grimsby Borough won at Arnold Eagles while Dronfield Town shared the points with Grimsby Town Academy and runaway leaders Gainsborough Trinity won easily at Notts County Development.

The result leaves Belper in 8th place out of 10 teams in the East Midlands Women's Regional Football League Division One North with a crucial game next up at home to Arnold, the team directly below them.

The Reserves were without a game this weekend and sit in 5th place in the Derbyshire Girls & Ladies League Division Two.
