On two minutes Alice Faulding produced a great run past a Chesterfield defender before running in to the box but the visitors cleared for a corner then a couple of minutes later at the other end Melvina Luhinzo went on a run of her own but the Nailers backline were able to get the ball away.
Some good interplay between Steph O'Brien and Luhinzo in the sixth minute gave the former a shooting opportunity from outside the box but Maggie Buxton produced a great save.
The ten minute mark saw some fantastic play from Jess Smithurst, she found Phallon Symcox whose shot was well saved by Rhianne Carroll.
Belper took the lead on 13 minutes when Mia Carnelley's great free kick from the halfway line picked out Symcox who slotted the ball home.
The lead was doubled four minutes later when Chesterfield could only half clear a cross before the ball fell to Liv Froggatt six yards from goal and she made no mistake.
Smithurst nearly made it three in the 19th minute with a fantastic effort inside the box, producing a full stretch one handed save from Carroll.
Gee Bestwick tried her luck from range on 25 minutes but Carroll was equal to it again to ensure the lead remained at two.
Ten minutes before the break again it was nearly three with Symcox once again keeping Carroll busy.
The final action of the first half saw the visitors come close to halving the deficit, Callie Moss's shot from outside the box whizzing past the post.
Four minutes in to the second half Froggatt's great ball in to the box found Faulding but her shot was over the bar and it was likewise at the other end with O'Brien's free kick.
Froggatt then saw her shot go over the bar when through on goal and shortly afterwards the returning Jess Needham saw her effort go narrowly wide after being picked out by Smithurst.
The crucial third goal arrived on 63 minutes. Froggatt produced a great ball to Symcox who ran down the line and picked out a good pass of her own to Faulding and she did the rest with a brilliant finish.
In the 71st minute Moss shot narrowly over then shortly after Buxton was called in to action again, this time to prevent Watkinson.
Chesterfield's fightback started 15 minutes from time. It was substitute Emily Walker who scored with a fantastic long range shot to inject some confidence to the team in blue.
On 77 minutes they were within one goal, Watkinson adding their second to set up a nervy finish for the Nailers.
Smithurst's great ball eight minutes from time picked out Faulding who laid the ball off for Carnelley who tested Carroll once more.
Belper had two further chances to settle any nerves in the last few minutes, first Needham and then Smithurst seeing their efforts blocked by the impressive Carroll.
The Nailers saw out six minutes of stoppage time and move to 6th in the table.
Only two other games went ahead, with Lincoln United defeating Notts County 1-0 and Arnold Eagles winning 3-1 at Newark Town.
