Chris Nelson13 Oct - 09:11

Belper Town Ladies progressed to the Second Round of the League Cup with a narrow victory over Sherwood, writes Tom Whewell.

Belper's first sight of goal came on two minutes when Gee Bestwick's corner fell to Phallon Symcox, her shot was well saved by Chloe Wood.

In the seventh minute a fantastic run by Polly Lees-Collier saw her evade the Belper defence but Maggie Buxton was equal to the shot.

Four minutes later a great counter-attack by Sherwood saw Mikeala Noriega pick out Lees-Collier but the shot was wide.

On 13 minutes Liv Froggatt's run and pass created a chance for Jess Smithurst but her effort was wide then shortly after Alice Faulding's great ball to Bestwick created a shooting opportunity but Wood tipped it wide for a corner.

In the 27th minute Symcox picked out a brilliant pass to Faulding but Wood was out quickly to clear the danger before on the half hour mark Kelsey Wragg found herself on the end of a through ball before picking out Faulding who produced a good save from Wood with her feet.

The final action of the first half saw Griffiths sinbinned for Sherwood but Belper couldn't make the player advantage count.

Sherwood started the second half with a couple of chances for Elliott, who shot wide after a good run then again after being played in by Lees-Collier.

The decisive goal came on 53 minutes. Wragg's pinpoint freekick reached Smithurst who produced a great finish in to the bottom corner.

Faulding had a couple of chances to double the lead on the hour mark with a good run in to the box but Wood was pulled off two great saves and then Faulding found herself through from a lovely Shannon Worrall pass but could only find the side netting.

On 73 minutes Crompton shot wide following a good run by Lees-Collier.

The final chance came in injury time when Evie Jowett had a chance to seal the win but her shot was just wide.

Belper hung on to progress to the next round.
