Point at Cleethorpes secures safety for Ladies Team

Chris Nelson7 Apr - 08:30

Belper Town Ladies will play in the East Midlands Regional Division One North again next season after coming from two goals down to earn a point at Cleethorpes Town, writes Tom Whewell.

Belper started well with Gee Bestwick's long range shot going just wide on two minutes then soon after Mia Carnelley seeing her free kick narrowly miss.

The first chance for Cleethorpes came after four minutes when Revill got a shot away which Maggie Buxton was able to watch go wide then back up the other end Jowett couldn't quite find the target.

In an action packed opening, the hosts took the lead in the seventh minute when a cross was swung in from Olivia Smith which caught the wind and went straight into the net.

The lead was nearly doubled five minutes later with Blackwood's shot being deflected wide for a corner.

In the 29th minute Jowett's great ball found Carnelley but Rice made the save.

Cleethorpes made it two on 35 minutes. After a great ball Evie Oldfield produced a brilliant finish.

Belper had a chance to pull a goal back five minutes before the break when Boden picked out Jowett who shot wide.

The Nailers were back in the match on the stroke of half-time. After a pull on Carnelley, Alice Faulding stepped up to convert the penalty.

There was still time for another chance, Jowett unable to find the target after a great run.

Belper levelled the scores in the 50th minute. Great work by Bestwick to find Faulding who finished into the corner to make it 2-2.

On 55 minutes the Nailers had a chance to take the lead, Boden with a free kick just over the bar then a couple of minutes later Boden tried her luck again but it was just wide.

The 65th minute saw another Boden free kick go just wide as Belper continued to knock on the Cleethorpes door.

13 minutes from time, Jowett saw another great effort hit the post and go wide, the Belper striker being unfortunate to end the day with no goals to her credit.

The final chance went to Belper in injury time when a Boden corner picked out Carnelley, her shot went over the bar.

So the Nailers secure safety with one game to spare. While Cleethorpes, second bottom can still catch Belper, the Nailers have a one point advantage over both Notts County and Newark Town who have completed their fixtures.

Next up is the Plate Final at Ilkeston Town on the 19th of April before the league campaign ends with a visit from basement side Lincoln United.

Belper Town: Buxton, Allison, Claxton, James, Longdon (Pickard 46), Bestwick (Longdon 80), Boden, Carnelley, Jowett, Smithurst, Faulding
