After 10 league matches and despite playing some great football, Belper sat bottom of the league with a solitary point and relegation looked a certainty.
Since then this team has recorded four wins in the past seven matches and after today’s win head into their final league match of the season next week with their fate in their own hands which is an incredible achievement from this squad of players who simply never give up.
Allenton played resolutely all match and opened the scoring 15 minutes into this match, only for Louise Hawley to immediately peg them back with a finely taken finish following a great through ball from Lauren Murfin. Four minutes later Hawley returned the favour laying the ball to Murfin who fired into the corner with a left foot strike.
Belper defended brilliantly when they had to and constantly built from the back playing their trademark passing game which was a joy to watch at times.
Murfin played in skipper Jess Burke on 30 minutes who ran the ball in and finished well before the finest goal of this match when on 40 minutes Murfin smashed a swerving right footed shot into the top corner to make it 4-1 at half time.
On 52 mins two of the half time subs combined to score Belper’s fifth, Elisha Billyeald playing a fine through ball for Leah Fraser to finish coolly.
On the hour Burke made it a brace with a fine strike from outside the box before the rain and hail fell which created difficult conditions for both teams.
Credit to Allenton who never gave up and they grabbed a further consolation at the end of the match.
So it’s on to an early away match at Buxton next Sunday where Belper has the chance to finish the season in style!
